Swan Creek Cleanup

Swan Creek Park Uplands 2106 E 44th St, Tacoma, WA, United States

Join Tacoma Ocean Fest and Pierce Conservation District for a community cleanup at Swan Creek Park.

Get out those LEDs – and if you have one, a kayak or paddleboard. On Friday June 2, Tacomans will light up the Thea Foss Waterway with the annual Lantern Paddle for Species, a part of Tacoma Ocean Fest 2022.

With FREE shoreside/inside entertainment from 7-11pm, lantern-making workshop, FREE light art and paddle launch at 9pm, the event isn’t just a cool excuse to rig up lights on your paddlecraft or wave them on land.

You’ll also be helping create a magical twilight moment, celebrating all threatened species – like our own orcas and salmon – and reminding our world what we need to do to protect them from pollution, climate change and extinction.

WHERE: Foss Waterway Seaport, 705 Dock St, Tacoma MAP IT
PARKING: Republic lot north of Seaport
LAUNCH: Launch your SUP or kayak from the Seaport's ramp and dock, or float down from Thea's Park just north.

HOW CAN YOU HELP PROTECT MARINE SPECIES?

WHERE TO LAUNCH?

On the west side, there are parking and launch spots at Thea's Park (535 Dock St), the Foss Waterway Seaport (705 Dock St, park in Republic lot), and Dock St Marina (1817 Dock St, park on street or under Museum of Glass - after 8pm.)
LOOKING FOR LIGHTS? PADDLES?
Join our FREE lantern-making workshop with Bell Street Creative, inside the museum from 7-8:30pm. All materials supplied!
Or get creative and bring your own! LEDs, holiday lights, glow lights, luminaria, even just a flashlight or two: Get creative but remember - single-use plastic harms the ocean.

They need our support. This will be the largest wildlife restoration project in the United States today.

Come hear:

Picking up trash off a beach is a good thing. But if you can count it for science, then toss it into a giant octopus sculpture, it’s even better.

That’s exactly what Tacomans can do at the annual Tacoma Shoreline Survey & Cleanup. Centered on Jack Hyde Park on Ruston Way, the event actually stretches around the 13 miles of Tacoma’s shoreline.

Doing the TSS Cleanup is easy. First,  download the Ocean Conservancy's Clean Swell app (Apple or Android), allow GPS location and create an account. Then start tracking the trash you find. After submitting, choose “Share” and email a copy to ken@ikkatsuproject.org to get your count included in the Tacoma Shoreline Survey.

Then comes the extra-fun part! Pick your trash as you go, and if you're near Jack Hyde Park from 9am-1pm, get it weighed and put it into the Trashoctopus! A giant metal sculpture by Tacoma artists Nichole Rathburn and Ed Kroupa, the Trashoctopus is also a trash can that will be roaming Tacoma's beaches all month. Fill it with trash and protect our waters!

You can cleanup and submit data all day long from any shore in Tacoma. Please wear a mask and social-distance. Stay home if you’re sick.

The Tacoma Shoreline Survey & Cleanup is a partnership between The Ikkatsu Project, South Sound Surfrider and Tacoma Ocean Fest.
