THE PROBLEM
Plastic is a huge problem in our oceans.
Since humans invented plastic, we’ve produced 9.1 billion tons – around the same weight every year as all of humanity.
A lot of plastic ends up in the ocean – via littering, storm drains, or escaping trash or recycling collection.
That plastic is everywhere in the ocean. It chokes, tangles and starves sea animals and birds, and picks up toxic chemicals.
Then it breaks up into smaller and smaller microplastics, which end up inside animals and our water sources.
It never goes away.
